Rooted in the ancestral textile traditions of Mali, Bogolan (bògòlanfini, “made of mud”) is a living language of matter, where cotton, earth, plants, and time converge into a slow process of transformation. Far beyond textile, it is a cultural grammar—where surface becomes archive, and gesture becomes memory. This Textile Totem is developed in collaboration with the Malian artisanal cooperative AAAA, dedicated to the preservation and contemporary reactivation of Bogolan craftsmanship. Each work is entirely handmade, from cotton spinning and hand-weaving to the natural fermentation of dyes and earth-based pigmentation. The structure is composed of handwoven cotton strips, later assembled into vertical modular compositions. This deliberate fragmentation and recomposition defines the visual identity of the work: a rhythmic architecture in which imperfection, variation, and structure coexist in precise equilibrium. Earth, botanical tannins, and natural oxidation processes generate deep, organic tonalities that subtly shift across the surface, giving each section a distinct chromatic breath. The result is a textile presence that feels at once archaic and contemporary—raw matter refined into form, landscape translated into surface. Conceived as a sculptural textile installation, the Bogolan Textile Totem inhabits interior and architectural spaces not as decoration, but as material narration—silent, grounded, and profoundly spatial. No two works are ever the same; each one emerges as an unrepeatable convergence of gesture, earth, and time.
