La Romana operates as a cultural trompe-l’œil. What appears at first glance as a visual reference to distant geographies — at times misread through non-European aesthetic codes — gradually reveals a different origin rooted in Roman cultural memory. Traditional Roman garments are reinterpreted through a contemporary visual language, generating a deliberate displacement of perception where cultural reading becomes unstable and layered. At the center of the work is the figure of the Lupa (she-wolf), the foundational symbol of Rome associated with origin, myth and protection. The woman’s gaze carries what can be read as the gaze of the she-wolf itself — a presence that is at once human, symbolic and archetypal. This shift transforms the image into an exercise in visual misreading, where what is seen is continuously negotiated between recognition and assumption.
